It is believed that the Sheilat songs have emerged from Saudi Arabia, but the history dates back to hundreds of years in various regions of the Arabian Peninsula, where this style of songs were performed amongst Bedouin tribes. Sheilat accompanies many occasions, such as preparing for an invasion in battles, receiving delegations, and weddings. The Shilah begins with a mawwal (vocal presentation), followed by poetry sung in the poet’s own voice or performed by a colloquial vocalist. This mix was prepared by Bara’a, writer at Ma3azef based in Amman, for her article on The Sheilat Songs.
